"The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before. Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty. You might say, I am not the creative type. If that is how you feel, think again. Creation is your opportunity in this life….. Start small. Creativity does not require a brush, a pen, or the keys of a piano. Don’t let the voice of critics paralyze you. You will make the World a better place. Improve, beautify, extend, smile, cultivate, develop, create."

Calling

I got a calling on Sunday.
the primary secretary.

I know next to very little about primary. I have always done something with Relief Society since I got out of Young Women after high school! I feel a little like a fish out of water.

My first experience? a 3 1/2 hour presidency meeting interfering with lunch and nap time. Tired and hungry are not a good combination. Initiation by fire!!

New experience, here we come!

Have any of you had my calling? Any tips? Advice? Good experiences? I know you want to share...

I was the primary secretary for awhile and i LOVED it! I was always trying to find people to substitute (it's amazing how many people just don't show up) so I passed around a list in relief society and the priesthood meetings and asked for volunteers. I gave the list to the teachers and sometimes I had to just pull them right out of their class.

Taking kids to the bathroom during sharing time is always a treat - be ready for some good laughs in the bathroom!

Well I've never been in the presidency for primary, but Justin and I taught it since we've been married, and I taught it for a little bit before I got married. So I've technically been in the primary for about 5 years now! However, the presidencies we had were all awesome. I think primary prepared me for kids to be honest, because I never grew up around little kids so the experience of teaching them and just being around them in general every Sunday was very educational, not only about being a mom, but also just about how taking life too seriously is not worth it! Once you're around those kids long enough, you'll start learning from them in different ways that you never really thought you could. I know, I sound like I'm giving a speach or something, but seriously, it's pretty fun. Although, Justin and I are hoping to not be called to primary in our new ward. It would be nice to have some "grown-up" lessons for a change!!

I too was in the primary forever, until just recently. About 6 years! I've had just about every calling in the primary, but secretary was the best. The biggest piece of advice is to to be organized, (everyone will look to you for everything), and second, have a few back up talks prepared in case the talks don't show up. Have fun, you'll be awesome!

Congrats! What a fun calling! Be organized is my best piece of advice. Really the primary secretary is a busy calling so be prepared. Use sugardoodle.net There are so many ideas. I learned in my primary presidency experience that the primary does not run without the secretary!

I've never been in the Primary Presidency but Jason and I are Primary teachers and I would suggest to you to keep the teachers informed. If there is a Primary presidency/teacher meeting, don't tell them a couple days before. And one thing I have been bothered about is the primary presidency will have something cute like a get to know you game where each child has to fill out things about them. I got a couple new kids in our class so I asked several times for a couple of those forms...never got them. But I'm so excited for you! Primary is awesome! The kids are so cute and so special:)

I was the secretary when I was first put in. Now I am the second counselor. I love, love, love the primary!!! It's is the best calling I have ever had. I don't ever want to be anywhere else. It's the best.

Wow! I have to say being the secretary was my favorite calling! But it is a lot of work! Getting substitutes, finding people to fill in last minute. My favorite part is listening in on sharing time and singing time. Kids are pretty funny! The best calling ever, you'll do great. It does feel overwhelming at first but it is great to be in primary. Most of the work sits on you and the president and that is hard but very rewarding.

Hey Mindi! I'm the primary secretary in our ward, and my only advice would be just to get organized in a way that works for you. I've done what the old secretary did for a year now, and it just doesn't work for me, so I'm changing it next year. I'm going to do more of a rotation with assigning talks and scriptures instead of just having the teachers assign it randomly- the same kids volunteer each week and then only the same kids give talks...that probably doesn't make sense. Oh well- you'll do great anyway!:)

Thanks for the help with Leah that made it possible for me to graduate. And about primary. It's not as scary as it sounds. You will do great!!!

I just got released from the presidency as a counselor and put in as a teacher. My advice, ALWAYS have the Friend on hand for the talks that don't show up then you can just have a child read it. The next is something you can probably relate with right now. Have paper towels, gloves, wipes, bandaids, etc. in an easy reach place in case of accidents or injuries. Our sec. and myself were usually in the hall together and had to deal with throw up, pee, and other bodily functions. Oh, and don't forget to make the reminder calls to minimize forgotten responsibilities. You will be great!
